Breast Cancer Fund

An Effective Practice

Description

The Breast Cancer Fund believes that most breast cancer can be prevented, and has adopted the bold mission to eliminate the environmental causes of the disease. Through public education, policy initiatives, outdoor challenges and other innovative campaigns, the Breast Cancer Fund mobilizes the public to secure the changes needed to stop this devastating epidemic.

Goal / Mission

The goal of the Breast Cancer Fund is to identify and advocate for elimination of environmental and other preventable causes of breast cancer.

Results / Accomplishments

Two Breast Cancer Fund supported bills were signed into law in 2005: the Cosmetics Safety Act and a radiation safety bill. As a founding member of the Campaign for Safe Cosmetics, the Breast Cancer Fund has convinced numerous leading cosmetics companies to replace known or suspected carcinogens, mutagens and reproductive toxins in their products with safe alternatives. The Fund completed a series of three Spanish language brochures to prevent breast cancer in the Latina community. Within the first year, over 12,000 brochures were distributed to health clinics, ethnic health providers, and other service and advocacy groups. The group sponsors outdoor fund raising events including Climb Against the Odds and Bike Against the Odds.
