YMCA Diabetes Support Group

A Good Idea

Description

The Diabetes Support Group at the YMCA of Florida's First Coast provides free education and support for those with diabetes, at-risk for diabetes, or affected by diabetes. Each month, a professional from the Jacksonville community presents and answers questions. The support group features speakers from across the First Coast who specialize in areas such as podiatry, dentistry, nursing, nutrition and exercise. Because diabetes affects the entire body, the main focus is to help educate the community on how to improve whole body health.

Goal / Mission

The Diabetes Support Group provides ongoing education and support to those living with, at risk for, or affected by diabetes in the community.

Results / Accomplishments

The Diabetes Support Group at the Yates YMCA in Riverside began in February 2011. An average of 12 participants have attended each meeting over the past year. Twenty-four participants were present at the January 2013 meeting, which shows a growing interest in the group. A different guest speaker is featured at each monthly meeting. A second support group has since been launched at the Barco-Newton Family YMCA in Fleming Island.
