Combined Heat and Power Partnership

An Effective Practice

Description

Combined Heat and Power (CHP), also known as cogeneration, is an efficient and reliable approach to generating power and thermal energy from a single fuel source. By installing a CHP system designed to meet the thermal and electrical base loads of a facility, CHP can increase operational efficiency and decrease energy costs, while reducing emissions of greenhouse gases that contribute to the risks of climate change. CHP is more efficient, cleaner, and reliable than conventional central power plants. The EPA Combined Heat and Power Partnership is a voluntary program that seeks to reduce the environmental impact of power generation by fostering the use of cost-effective CHP.

Goal / Mission

The CHP Partnership is a voluntary program that seeks to reduce the environmental impact of power generation by promoting the use of CHP.The Partnership works closely with energy users, the CHP industry, state and local governments, and other stakeholders to support the development of new projects and promote their energy, environmental, and economic benefits.

Results / Accomplishments

Through 2005, CHP Partners installed 3,460 Megawatts of CHP with Partnership assistance, resulting in emissions reductions that are equivalent to planting more than 2.5 million acres of trees.

The CHP Partnership offers various services throughout the CHP project development cycle. These services include:

- Providing project-specific technical assistance, including targeted feasibility analyses
- Providing a current listing of state and federal CHP incentives, information on state regulatory treatment and utility rates favorable to clean distributed generation projects, and state and federal biomass/biogas incentives
- Facilitating peer-to-peer marketing and networking
- Administering ENERGY STAR CHP Awards and EPA CHP Certificates of Recognition
- Creating press releases for awards and project ribbon-cutting ceremonies
- Creating targeted sales collateral
- Profiling CHP potential in targeted markets
