READ 180

An Effective Practice

Description

READ 180 is a comprehensive system of curriculum, instruction, assessment, and professional development. Teachers begin each session with 20-minutes and end with 10-minutes of Whole-Group Instruction which engages the entire class. In between the Whole-Group Instruction, there are three different segments each spanning 20-minutes: Instructional Software, Small-Group Instruction, and Modeled and Independent Reading. These three 20-minute segments are designed to improve spelling, writing, vocabulary, fluency, and reading comprehension.

Goal / Mission

The goal of READ 180 is to improve literacy among children and teenagers through curriculum, instruction, assessment, and professional development.

Results / Accomplishments

A school in the Cypress-Fairbanks Independent School District in Texas implemented READ 180. They conducted the Texas Assessment of Knowledge and Skills (TAKS) both before and after READ 180 was implemented and found that students who had participated in the program improved their score on the TAKS. From 2008 to 2009, students in grades 4 and 5 improved their scores from 54% to 67%; students in grades 7 and 8 improved their scores from 14% to 66%; and students in grade 9 improved their scores from 22% to 34%.
