Market Makeovers/Corner Store Conversions

A Good Idea

Description

Students in south Los Angeles were frustrated with the lack of healthy food options in their neighborhood. To address this issue, high school students spoke with local market owners and persuaded them to sell fresh produce and other nutritious food. The students assisted the market owners with creating displays of nutritious food in the front of the store, and moving unhealthy food, such as soda and potato chips, to the back of the store.

Goal / Mission

The goal of this program is to reduce childhood obesity and diabetes by increasing access to nutritious food for children and families.

Results / Accomplishments

The work of the high school students helped pass a temporary ban on new fast food restaurants in the South LA area. Using the three corner store conversions in their neighborhood as case studies, the students have created a toolkit to help other communities with 'market makeovers'.
