Acupuncturists Without Borders

A Good Idea

Description

Acupuncturists Without Borders (AWB) was established to develop and implement acupuncture based programs that help facilitate community and personal healing in the face of large-scale traumatic events and their aftermath. When left untreated, the emotional and psychological consequences of trauma have the potential to compound the damages, further unraveling lives. Acupuncture is a simple, low-cost modality offering immediate, effective, and easily accessible treatment for large numbers of people, easily adaptable for administration under a wide array of circumstances. Acupuncture has proven highly successful in helping heal the psychological consequences of trauma with studies showing outcomes comparable to cognitive behavioral therapy.

Goal / Mission

The mission of Acupuncturists Without Borders is to help alleviate suffering of people worldwide through community acupuncture treatment and training.

Results / Accomplishments

AWB has provided free acupuncture services to victims of 9/11 and Hurricane Katrina. Since September 2005, AWB has treated over 7,000 residents, relief workers and volunteers in New Orleans. AWB is currently developing a program to provide free acupuncture treatments to Iraq veterans throughout the United States.
