Geriatric Initiative

A Good Idea

Description

As the population of West Virginia continues to age, the need for geriatric care grows. Charleston Area Medical Center (CAMC) aims to increase the availability of appropriate care for the elderly through its Geriatrics Initiative. The program consists of three new training programs in geriatrics for physicians, pharmacists and nurse practitioners, geriatric research projects, and community activities and classes to support local seniors and their caregivers.

Goal / Mission

The goal of the Geriatrics Initiative is to make healthcare more accessible and of higher quality for the elderly population served by Charleston Area Medical Center.

Results / Accomplishments

Three training programs for healthcare professionals are active. In 2010, one geriatric pharmacy resident, two geriatric medicine fellows, and six geriatric post-master's nursing students graduated the training programs.
