Women Overcoming Violence

A Good Idea

Description

Women Overcoming Violence is a domestic violence program that provides holistic healing services to women who face intimate partner violence. In addition to emotional, verbal, sexual, financial, physical, and psychological abuse, the program addresses associated concerns such as co-dependence, substance abuse, mental health issues and homelessness. The program includes a daily support group where women can drop-in to help each other take incremental steps toward healthier life decisions and relationships. Each day of the week has a theme (e.g. Meditation and Stress Reduction, Healthy Relationships, Acupuncture for Trauma) and the session is followed by a free group breakfast. Additional services include weekly "Fun & Activity for Women" and "Songs of Our Ancestors: Healing Thru Negro Spirituals". For women who need closer support, the program offers Moving Beyond Survival, a 6-week closed support group to take a closer look at personal histories and the root of risky behavioral patterns.

Goal / Mission

Women Overcoming Violence assists women who are victims of domestic violence, homelessness, substance abuse, and mental health issues in their recovery using a unique, holistic approach.

Results / Accomplishments

In 2011, over 400 women participated in drop-in support groups.
