Promotores de la Salud de los Niños

A Good Idea

Description

The Promotores de la Salud de los Niños Program uses volunteers from the Latino community to help locate Latino families in King County, WA that are eligible for various services and helps them gain access to those services.

Promotores receive ongoing training, once every two months, which prepares them to locate difficult to access low-income Latino families and educate those families about health and social services for which they may be eligible. They are also trained in how to assist as families complete applications for state-funded dental and medical services and in how to get families connected to those services with local health providers. A Project Coordinator is in place to provide supervision and quality assurance.

Goal / Mission

The goal of the Promotores de la Salud de los Niños Program is to use volunteers from the Latino community to locate families in King County that are eligible for services and help families get connected to those services.

From May 2008 to September 2009, Promotores helped 304 children from Latino families apply for publicly-funded health coverage and succeeded in having 249 of those children enroll for health coverage. Additionally, 595 medical and dental visits were facilitated by Promotores.
