Rock and Wrap It Up!

A Good Idea

Description

Rock and Wrap It Up! is a national anti-poverty think tank that collects and donates leftover food and other materials from rock concerts, sporting events, hotels, corporate meetings, political rallies, and school cafeterias. In general, caterers prepare 10 to 15 percent more food than they need for an event, resulting in a large amount of food waste. Rock and Wrap It Up! helps bands, political figures, and sports teams create contracts with caterers that allow for leftover food to be donated to local soup kitchens. Volunteers from Rock and Wrap It Up! organize the safe recovery and delivery of edible leftover food at the end of events. There is no cost to program partners; food donations reduce disposal costs, and volunteers from the program save on labor expenses.

Goal / Mission

The goal of Rock and Wrap It Up! is to collect leftover food from large events and donate it to local agencies.

Results / Accomplishments

Since 1991, more than 5,000 volunteers have worked with Rock and Wrap It Up! in 500 cities. The program has supplied over 100 million pounds of food to more than 200 million people at over 41,000 shelters. The program works with over 150 touring bands, 31 sports franchises, and 200 schools to recover to feed the poor. The 2008 Federal Food Donation Act was written and passed with Rock and Wrap It Up's assistance.
