Trauma Center Intervention for Alcohol Disorders

An Evidence-Based Practice

Description

The Trauma Center Intervention for Alcohol disorders is a brief intervention regarding alcohol use for patients involved in motor vehicle collisions. Drivers and passengers who have been admitted to the hospital for more than 24 hours after an injury resulting from a motor vehicle collision are eligible for the program if they had an admission blood alcohol content of more than 80 mg/dL or an Alcohol Use Disorders Identification Test score of more than 8. The brief intervention consisted of a 30-minute discussion in the patient's room with a social worker or trauma surgeon. The conversation consists of a non-confrontational, patient-centered discussion to discuss how alcohol use has affected the patient's life. The intervention uses the participant's experiences to boost self-efficacy to make change.

Goal / Mission

The goal of the Trauma Center Intervention for Alcohol Disorders is to reduce driving under the influence.

Results / Accomplishments

A randomized controlled trial compared intervention participants with patients receiving the standard care, along with a list of telephone numbers for alcohol treatment organizations near their home. In the three years following hospital discharge, 14 of 64 patients (21.9%) in the standard care group had an arrest for DUI compared with only 7 of 62 patients (11.3%) in the intervention group. Multivariate analysis demonstrated that the intervention was the strongest protective factor against DUI arrest (odds ratio 0.32; 95% confidence interval 0.11-0.96). The absolute risk reduction indicates that one DUI arrest is prevented for every nine patients treated.
