Caring for Kids

An Effective Practice

Description

Children who live or have lived with someone who has an untreated substance use disorder are three to four times more likely to abuse alcohol or drugs. They are also at risk for physical violence and psychological trauma as well as a reduced life expectancy. Research indicates that children and youth are at less risk for child abuse and substance abuse if the following needs are addressed:

• Relief from guilt and shame
• Self-esteem
• Validated feelings and acceptance
• Emotional support and coping skills
• Structure and consistency
• Healthy role modeling
• A safety plan

Caring for Kids targets at-risk youth impacted by a loved one's substance use. The curriculum is designed to: (1) help kids build a healthy life by focusing on themselves and other non-addicted adults, (2) encourage and support healthy choices, and (3) create a safe place to share and overcome shame and self-blame.

Goal / Mission

The goal of Caring for Kids is to provide youth impacted by a loved one's substance use with the tools they need to stay safe and build a healthy life, and to reduce the likelihood that impacted youth will abuse substances.

Impact

In 2013, more than 250 youth were impacted by Caring for Kids. 90% of youth participants showed a decreased likelihood of alcohol or other drug use, and 100% completed an action plan.

Results / Accomplishments

In 2013, 251 children and youth attended Caring for Kids. Upon completion of the program, 90% showed decreased likelihood of use of alcohol or other drugs, and 100% completed an action plan.
