Beers List Beneficiary Count

Select a County
Measurement Period: 2021 Q3
The number of Medicaid-eligible beneficiaries in Michigan that also met the American Geriatrics Society Beers Criteria for Potentially Inappropriate Medication Use in Older Adults in the first three quarters of 2021.

Why is this important?

Recent studies have shown that more than 90% of older people use at least one prescription and more than 66% use 3 or more in any given month. The AGS Beers Criteria is catalogue of treatments and medications that providers should take extra consideration in before using. There are five categories that these drugs/treatments are broken down into:
1. Avoided by most older people (outside of hospice and palliative care settings)
2. Avoided by older people with specific health conditions
3. Avoided in combination with other treatments because of the risk of harmful drug-drug interactions
4. Used with caution because of the potential harmful side effects
5. Dosed differently or avoided among people with reduced kidney function, which impacts how the body processes medicine.
